This course is for city clerks, or those who require more detailed knowledge of the Data Practices Act and its impact on city government. This course is made up of three lessons: Data Practices Basics and Classifications, Data Practices Procedures and Responsibilities, and Data Practices Rights and Penalties.
By completing this course, you’ll not only understand what constitutes government data, but be prepared to take action as the Responsible Authority when a data request is received.
- Data Practices Basics and Classifications (25 minutes): learn the different data classifications and their impact on local government.
- Data Practices Procedures and Responsibilities (15 minutes): review the requirements of the Data Practices Act and be able to take action when a data request is received.
- Data Practices Rights and Penalties (20 minutes): explore the primary areas of interest for data requests (including email, personnel data, and law enforcement data), understand the penalties for not complying with the Data Practices Act, and be prepared to effectively apply the law to your city.
